At the heart of the new approach is the merchandising yard. It provides the log cross cutting and storage capacity for the site generating the timber for the other processes on site.
Forestry Tasmania is planning to construct the merchandising yard.
Truck-loads of logs will be deposited on the mechanical merchandising line log infeed deck. Individual logs are moved from the deck through a log scanner.
The log scanner will identify significant surface defects in the log and advise the operator of a cutting pattern to extract the optimum value of different products from the log.
Computer controlled saws will cross cut the log to create the products.
The products move along a conveyor line to kick off stations that place the products in separate pockets for delivery to the other processes.
The maximum size of log that will fit on the line is approximately 75 cm in diameter.
The merchandising line will process about 2 tonnes of logs a minute.
Provision for recovery of special species timbers is also being made as part of the merchandising concept.
The merchandising yard will work on either two or three shift with about 5 people on each shift.
